11:45 am - LJ going down?
As some of you already know, SUP/Fabrik, the owner of LiveJournal, has laid of a significant number of their American-based workers.

People are panicking that LiveJournal will fold soon. With that in mind, it might be a good time to let your friends know about CommieJournal. At the very least, they can back their journals up to an account here using LJ Sec.

We aren't going anywhere!

03:30 pm - Religious Freedom 2009: Living With Our Deepest Differences
Let’s ring in the New Year with some good news about our country: Despite bitter culture wars, outbreaks of nativism, and pockets of intolerance, the United States begins 2009 as the boldest and most successful experiment in living with religious differences the world has ever known.

This is no small achievement in a world torn by religious hatred and sectarian violence. Christian vs. Muslim in

03:30 pm - Mother's Colorful Memorial To Her Son Has Both Fans And Critics
As the coroner zipped her son into a body bag, Susan "Willow" Schroeder looked at his blood on the concrete next to her home. She saw colors, all sorts of them, and resolved to replace the gruesome stain with something beautiful.

So she began to paint.

That night, near the door to his apartment, she wrote, "Heart of my heart, love will never die." The next morning, over the bloodstain in fro

Scooter, Skittles, and Snickers

These three charmers, a handful to be sure, were brought into the Jackson Co. Animal Shelter, along with their beautiful calico mother. Scooter and Skittles were adopted to good homes, and so was the mom, Roxy. Snickers currently has a job socializing a timid kitten in a foster home. He is a good worker, and the timid kitten is coming around! When Snickers’ job is done, he and the kitten will be brought back to the Shelter to be adopted. These were some of the cutest, funniest kittens at the Shelter, bouncing around and playing and chasing and having a great time. We really enjoyed having them, but are, of course, even happier that they are getting furever homes!

Button

Button is the sweetest, most loving cat. Nothing ever gets in the way of his playful happy attitude and he purrs his way through every situation, even visits to the vet. He’s a playful one too, and quite aerodynamic, able to leap off high surfaces with no notice & always eager for an impromptu snuggle.

Leo

This is my kitten Leo, only a couple of days after he moved in with me. You can’t actually see it here, but he was quite skeletal (he weighed only 10 ounces!) and very sick. I nursed him back to health and in spite of everything he had to go through, he always remained incredibly friendly, cuddly and playful. He hasn’t hurt me once in his life. Now, he totally cracks me up every day. He just has very particular ways of doing things…

05:30 pm - Need A Pagan Pick-Me-Up?
Churches have been decked with holly and ivy for Christmas, but few people pause to consider the heathen origins of those plants that feature so prominently at this time of year.

Ivy is associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility and licentiousness, whose crown and garlands were composed of intertwined ivy and vines. It was considered important by the followers of Bacchus because

Happy New Year! As we greet family and friends with this seasonal blessing, what a joy it can be to know we are part of a global tradition both ancient and ongoing. The history of humankind reveals a basic need to celebrate the changing of the seasons. For many cultures, the “return” of the sun at the Winter Solstice has marked the beginning of the New Year. Here is Angie’s brother, Chuck. He is just two months old in this picture, the very first one I took of him. He came from a kitty crowded apartment, seven adult cats and a litter of kittens! He and his sister love to thunder around the apartment and knock stuff off the kitchen table. If there’s the slightest hint that you might start petting him, he’ll start purrrrrrrrring. He’s quite the cuddle bug. He and Angie are now seven months old.

Jax & Hammy

My roommate and her friend were coming home from a Tool concert in Jacksonville, FL when they found these two little babies covered in mud during a rainstorm. They brought them back to Gainesville, and we fostered them for a few days. We weren’t sure what to do because they were so small, but luckily one of our friends is studying to be a vet. We bottle fed them and had them sleep on a heating pad. Now they live in Orlando, FL and are very happy and healthy!

Cloudy Boy

This is Cloudy Boy. My husband and I adopted him the the humane society in Tampa, Florida. My husband was not a huge fan of cats and told me before we got married that we would never ever ever get a cat. Ever! So, one day after work he had me jump in his car because he said he had a surprise for me. He drove me to the humane society and I got so excited because I thought we were going to adopt a little puppy, because a few days earlier we had gone to a pet store to look at puppies. We walked up to the counter and the lady asked us if we were there for puppies or kittens, and my husband said, ” a little kitty!” I was so ecstatic - Cloudy Boy was the first kitty I saw and I knew he was mine! Cloudy Boy loves to play with his little toy mice and loves blueberry muffins.

Merry Christmas from The Daily Kitten.

09:30 am - The Great Lansing Elf Visit Of 1998
For the purposes of this story, it would be important to point out that there's a difference between standard elves and Christmas elfs. Elves, according to Wikipedia, are fantastical creatures with roots in German folklore. Christmas elfs (do you see the difference in the spelling there?) specifically make toys, have pointy shoes and ears and wear shiny, red and green-colored clothes. One could as

09:30 am - Ho, Ho, No: Toymakers Say Lead Law Harms Workshops
Worries over lead paint in mass-market toys made the holidays a little brighter for handcrafted toy makers last year, but now the federal government's response to the scare has some workshops fearful that this Christmas might be their last.

A Catholic priest has been criticised by parents in a city in northern Italy for telling their children that Father Christmas does not really exist.

09:30 am - Celebrating The Magic Of Christmas
As the world gets into the Christmas spirit buying the Christmas tree, and the mistletoe, it is being debated that these traditions have very little to do with Christianity.

Most of these are associated with Winter Solstice, celebrated by the ancient religions and cultures and later adopted by Christianity when they decided to place the birth of Christ in the midst of this festive season.

Christmas for some Masterton witches has been caught up in a cut-and-thrust customs war over imported ceremonial knives.
